YOU are the Brand

The hero’s journey is such a powerful archetype in Western storytelling, because of the way the value of something is illuminated through triumph over hardship. The thread of this narrative can be found everywhere… from Star Wars to The Biggest Loser. Even Shrek! These stories are powerful because they ask ordinary people, even underdogs, to rise to the occasion. It is an opportunity to view adversity as a gift that shows you what you can carry.
Just as resistance helps to physically build muscle through a process of tearing and healing, going through difficult circumstances helps build your compassion muscle, as well as your resilience. Going through difficult times means you are in communion with the human experience.
Putting on your game face when it comes to your business is about saying “yes” to your livelihood and meeting resistance with growth. When you encounter obstacles in your life, pushing back often takes a leap of faith. Pushing back negative emotions to meet others with your best customer service smile, and pushing back against people who don’t quite see your vision yet, is all about needing things to move, and putting in that labor.
To push, to exert, and to grow, are all manifestations of change. Changing is just projecting what you want onto the world, using your “game face” to introduce the world to your most confident and competent self. Did Shrek start off thinking he deserved Princess Fiona? Of course not! He didn’t even want to leave his swamp. Did Jillian Michaels come out of the womb with a six-pack? Maybe, but it was more likely sculpted from hours of crunching and probably lots of kale. And their stories are better for it.
So, are you wearing your game face? Are you showing up as your best, most capable self?
