When you ask most people about their personal brand, they will usually shrug and reply that they don’t have one. It always surprises them to learn that they do have a brand, it’s just not working to their full advantage. Whether people know it or not, we all have one. What they also don’t understand is that they have 100% control of what that brand is.
A brand, simply defined is what people know you for. Think of any celebrity, politician, or leader and you will be able to define them by their branding. You see that most people feel like they are on a conveyor belt and that some of us are simply more desirable than others which is why some people are “picked” to be special.
This theory couldn’t be more wrong. No one is discovered. Nothing is going to come to you just sitting on that conveyor belt. It is all about how we present ourselves. Every politician, celebrity or leader is backed by meticulous and thorough branding. This is why so many people are so shocked when they hear bad things about famous people. The branding is sometimes so good that we see these individuals as super heroes.
The truth is they are just people. People who know how to brand themselves. They understand the importance of highlighting their strengths and diminishing their weaknesses. This is crucial to understand that these people are just like everyone else. They need sleep, air, water and food to survive just like everyone else. They put on their pants one leg at a time and they are made of skin and bone just like everyone else. What makes them remarkable isn’t something tangible, it's a mindset.
The mindset needed to succeed is the rarest of all. This mindset doesn’t indicate that those that possess it know everything. In fact, one of the greatest strengths this group exhibits is the fact that they know... they don’t know it all. This allows them to identify the areas where they are weak and address them. The people who think they know it all never make this realization. Consequently, they never seek out the training and expertise they need.
Personal branding starts here with the mindset. Welcome to the Nate State of mind.
